SPANISH

The study of a foreign language requires serious commitment to completing homework and maintaining active daily in-class participation to acquire the necessary skills to advance to the next level of instruction. It is strongly recommended that students feel confident that they have acquired the skills and proficiency at one level before advancing to the next year. Enrollment into an intermediate or advanced foreign language course may also be determined by an assessment by the Foreign Language Department.

Spanish IP: (2 semesters) CSU/UC

Students should possess a good knowledge of the English language. Students are taught to speak, understand, read, and write simple Spanish. Basic grammar is emphasized. Oral work is stressed.

Spanish IIP: (2 semesters) CSU/UC

This course continues the basic grammar presented in Spanish I, expanding with new tenses and expressions. Spanish will be spoken the majority of the time in the classroom.

Spanish IIP for Spanish Speakers: (2 semesters) CSU/UC

This is an introductory language course for native speakers of Spanish to develop their fundamental reading and writing skills. This course prepares students to continue in Spanish III for Spanish Speakers.

Spanish IIIP: (2 semesters) CSU/UC

A thorough review of Spanish IP and IIP is given. Students are taught to master the essentials of grammar and syntax. Conversational Spanish is stressed. Introduction of Spanish literature is included.

Spanish IIIP for Spanish Speakers: (2 semesters) CSU/UC

This course will offer native speakers of Spanish an opportunity to study grammar in depth through literature. Students will improve critical reading, writing, thinking, listening, and speaking skills through the study of literature and current events. Students will practice writing in various writing domains.

Spanish IVP: (2 semesters) CSU/UC

This college preparatory course will promote extensive oral practice, vocabulary building, reading comprehension, and development of communicative skills through exercises and activities. Students will be introduced to current, contemporary journalistic prose, which will enable them to read Spanish newspapers and magazines with ease.

Spanish IV Language AP: (2 semesters) CSU/UC

This college-level course will prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Examination in Spanish language in May which will enable them to receive college credit in Spanish. Intensive study of literature of various authors is blended with refinement of grammar and oral fluency skills. Students will read and comprehend prose and verse of moderate difficulty. Critical opinion and judgment will be expressed using oral and written Spanish.

Spanish V Literature AP: (2 semesters) CSU/UC

This college-level course will prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Examination in Spanish Literature in May which will enable them to receive college credit in Spanish. The course covers selected works from the literatures of Spain and Spanish America. Students will read and analyze Hispanic literature orally and in writing, in Spanish. Completion of the course will mean that language proficiency reached will be equal to that of a third-year Spanish course in grammar, composition and conversation.
