Goes on Special Assignment
It was announced that Mr. Floyd Braggs, Principal of Eisenhower High School,
will become a Principal on Special Assignment for the 2002-03 school year. He
will act as the District’s liaison for Charter Schools and the AVID Program,
as well as serve on the District’s Hearing Panel and assist with the implementation
of the CalSafe Program at the District’s Alternative Education Center.
Details of the various aspects of the special assignment are as follows:
- Last year the District approved a Charter School, the Carter/Walters Preparatory
School of the Arts, which will be opening this fall. The District has also
received inquiries from several additional Charter Schools, resulting in a
need for a District liaison.
- Each of the District’s five middle schools and two comprehensive high
schools offer the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program.
The District plans to expand the AVID program so that all secondary schools
can become AVID demonstration schools. Eisenhower High School was named a
demonstration school while Mr. Braggs served as principal. He is well versed
in the implementation of an AVID program and what it takes to be named a demonstration
school.
- The District is in need of an additional Hearing Officer to serve on the
District Administrative Hearing Panel for students being recommended to the
Board for expulsion. Mr. Braggs has site level experience and knowledge of
state laws that govern student expulsions.
- This year began the reorganization of the District’s Alternative Education
Center (AEC), located at the Milor/Zupanic/Adult Education facility. As part
of this reorganization, and because the District received a substantial grant
for the CalSafe Program, an infant toddler center will be opening at the AEC
to assist teen parents. There was a comparable program at Eisenhower High
School during Mr. Braggs’ tenure. His knowledge and experience will
assist with the implementation of the CalSafe program at the AEC.
Mr. Armand Messer, Eisenhower Assistant Principal, has been recommended to
serve as Acting Principal at Eisenhower High School.
