Dual Language Immersion Program

Research Insights

Studies have demonstrated:

  • Teaching literacy through the partner language does not place students at risk in their development of the two languages. By third or fourth grade, they usually score at least as high as native English speakers from monolingual classrooms on standardized tests of reading achievement.
  • Bilingual children have better executive control and cognitive flexibility.
  • Effective programs incorporate family and community engagement, leading to higher student grades, higher achievement, higher language proficiency, better social skills, and higher graduation rates and enrollment in postsecondary education.

Program Overview

Rialto Unified School District offers a K–9 Dual Language Immersion (DLI) pathway designed to develop bilingualism, biliteracy, and academic excellence. Beginning in elementary school, students participate in a 90/10 instructional model in grades K–5, where the majority of instruction is delivered in Spanish while English is gradually increased over time.

This model supports students in developing strong academic foundations in two languages, preparing them for continued success beyond elementary school. Our goal is to empower students with the language skills and cultural understanding needed to thrive in middle school, high school, and beyond.

90/10 Dual Language Immersion Model

In the 90/10 model, students learn together in both languages and serve as language models for one another. This collaborative environment strengthens language development, builds confidence, and reinforces meaningful language use across academic content.

Through intentional instruction and peer interaction, students grow as bilingual and biliterate learners while meeting grade‑level academic standards.
