Middle and High School Scope and Sequence

The goal of the secondary science teacher is to build on the elementary foundation to strengthen students' ability to make sense of the world around them. The eight practices constitute a single system of sense-making that works together to build coherence.  

NGSS views instruction as building coherent storylines, in which questions are grounded in phenomena, leading to investigations.  Students develop explanatory models through scientific argumentation that are constructed by interpreting evidence from investigations and critiquing the practices of those in the science community.

Beliefs

The Rialto USD Science service area believes:

  1. Science is what you DO.
  2. All Rialto USD students can excel in science/ STEM and access to science/STEM is a social justice issue.

We (teachers) have agency, and we are the change we want to see.

Rialto Unified School District’s science curriculum maps are standards-based maps driven by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and implemented at the middle school level using McGraw-Hill (Inspire Science)Gizmos, and teacher-created resources; and at the high school level, using STEM Scopes, SAAVAS, Gizmos, and teacher-created resources. Student achievement is increased when both teachers and students know where they are going (their standards), why they are going there, and what is required of them to get there.
